Ventriloquism

A ventriloquist, occasionally latinisierend as Ventriloquist ( from Latin: venter = belly loqui = talk ) referred to manipulate his voice in a way that they seem to come from another person, or a doll from a different direction.

Words is without eliciting an art movement of the mouth. We used to believe actually, the voice coming from the abdomen. Indeed, there are various techniques of ventriloquism. None of them has anything to do with the " speeches from the belly ". A distinction in learning ventriloquism in " pine lute " and " lip smacking ". Kiefer sounds are letters of the alphabet that does not have to be made with the lips (a, e, i, o, u, l, s ... ). When practicing only the jaw must be kept silent.

Lip sounds are more difficult to form (b, p, f, m, w). Make you without the use of the lips, requires practice. Utility in this respect are the tongue and the palate. Some ventriloquists make do,

  • By bypass words in their dialogues containing lip smacking,
  • That spare consonants are used, for example, a "b " with a " d" or "w " is replaced or an "m" be replaced by a "n". The correct word is "recognized" by the audience out of context ( the dialogue with the human part) or the doll is spoken with so high a disguised voice that this trick does not really stand.
  • By the performance is staged so that the perfectly rehearsed dialogues with the lip sounds fall to the human part and the doll reacts to it, without having to use lip smacking or repeats the words with the replacement consonants. What seems like a chance conversation between ventriloquist and dummy, is actually a rehearsed text, which after some practice can be quite varied.

Today's most common form of ventriloquism, the variety shows - earlier in Vaudeville - is listed, in this form, but just a little over 100 years old. In Vaudeville was not the humor in the foreground of a ventriloquist piece, but the skills of the artist, to deceive his audience with rapidly changing votes to as many people or dolls or animals.

Well-known ventriloquist of antiquity was Eurykles of Athens. In the Middle Ages and the early modern period, many monarchs held ventriloquist as court jesters.

In the U.S., Jules Vernon was a famous ventriloquist in vaudeville, which demonstrated his abilities on several figures. Perhaps the most famous was The Great Lester, who used only a single doll named Frank Byron, Jr., and who introduced her to many standards that are still listed in ideas. In Europe in the early 20th century joined the ventriloquist Fedor Wittkowski under the pseudonym Henry Rox, not only with his doll Max in variety shows on, he trained dogs, he had disguised ( including as Sailor) and speak.

In the middle of the 20th century was a student of The Great Lester, Edgar Bergen, Charlie McCarthy and his doll not only extremely popular in vaudeville, he appeared with her even in radio shows, where one could not see the doll. In these shows be delivered the doll, so actually mountains, including verbal battles with the actor WC Fields. In the 1950s and 1960s was very well known in the United States Paul Winchell with his dolls on television.
