Vepriai

Vepriai ( German, 18th Century: Weppren ) is a Lithuanian town ( miestelis ) and the center of the consular district of the same name ( seniūnija ) in the Rajongemeinde Ukmergė, southwest of the central city, not far from the highway Ukmergė - Jonava, 17 km from Ukmergė, 5 km southeast of Pageležiai.

Verpiai is the center of the joint management Vepriai with 663 inhabitants ( 2001). In the town there is a Roman Catholic parish with the saint st - Virgin Mary Queen of the Rosary Church ( Veprių SVC. Mergeles Marijos Rožančiaus Karalienes Baznycia ) built 1910. There is also the middle school Vepriai (since 1950). South of the town lies Vepriai lake. The name comes from the Baltic Vepriai word veprys (wild boar ).

Geography

Vepriai lies in the middle of the largest Baltic meteorite crater (diameter 8 km). The relief is hilly, with river valleys of giant, Ūdroklis and šventoji. The largest inland water Vepriai lake is used for recreation and fishing. In wetter areas, the deciduous forests dominate the hills are covered with small forests.

History

The first castle hill to Versteckungszwecken on the riverside Cedronas could 'm used 1,500 years ago. The tribal cemeteries ( pilkapiai ) of Kazlaučizna are from the 9th to 12th centuries ( they are located east of Vepriai ).

The name ( Weppren ) was first mentioned in the chronicles of V. of Marburg for the first time in 1384. At that time we described the construction of the highways by crusaders. At that time on the hill stood a wooden Vepriai Lithuanian castle of 1384, which was conquered with the help of Vytautas the Teutonic Order ending the political riots in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The castle lost its defensive function and beside her the courtyards were built. The settlement with the radial plan was owned by different noble families ( Kęsgailos, Šemetos ) on the road Ukmergė -Kaunas. 1770-1779 there were legal disputes over the courtyard between Tyzenhaus and Michal Kossakowski.

1808 sold the farm to Józef Antoni Tyzenhaus Dominik Kossakowski. During the 1831 uprising Emilie Plater lived for a time with their soldiers.

1845, the parish was founded Vepriai. 1864 Vepriai became the center. In 1924 it nationalized in the yard the Lower School of Agriculture.

Culture

1553 the first chapel was Vepriai mentioned. Today's neo-Gothic church was built 1910. Since the 19th century, there is a primary school.

Founded in 1950 to the middle school Vepriai. Since 1924, agricultural specialists are prepared in the Lower School of Agriculture. 2004, the Department of Training Vepriai the Technological and Economic School Ukmergė was opened.

Vepriai is since 1846 with Pentecost funfair and the Stations of the Cross known. The Way of the Cross is 5.5 km long and has 35 stations ( Stations of the Cross chapels and goals) instead of several earlier wooden chapel wall chapels were built from 1882 to 1900. 1963 almost all the chapels were destroyed by the Soviet occupation government (except in the church area). The stations were illegally built because of donations from residents in 1989. There are a total of 21 Mauerbaukapellchen, 8 wooden gates and an iron gate.

In Vepriai there is a branch of the State Museum of Ethnography Ukmergė with over 5,000 exhibits. There are also historical and cultural museum of regional studies researcher Jonas Žentelis.
