Veragri

The Veragrer (Latin Veragri; Οὐάραγροι Greek ) were a Celtic tribe of the area of ​​modern Swiss canton of Valais.

The Veragrer settled at the mouth of the Dranse in the Rhône. There was also her capital Octodurus, today Martigny. Their neighbors were the Seduner and Salassians. Other tribes in the Valais were the Ceutronen, Caturiger and Nantuaten. The Veragrer controlled the important pass of the Great St. Bernard (mons Poeninus ).

The Veragrer and its capital were Octodurus 57 BC Gaius Julius Caesar's Gallic war while by the Romans under Servius Sulpicius Galba the legate attacked and occupied. A counter-attack of the Celts failed (see Battle of Octodurus ). The final submission of Veragrer the Romans succeeded only under Augustus.
