Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter

The Association of German predicate and quality wineries eV (VDP ) is an association of about 200 top wineries in Germany, for binding quality standards and - used also for the ecological management of the wineries of its members - since 1990.

History

The association was founded in 1910 as the Association of German Nature wine auctioneer eV. The first chairman was Albert of Bruchhausen, Mayor of the city of Trier. Founding clubs were:

  • Association of natural wine - auction the Rhine Palatinate founded in 1908
  • Association Rheingau vineyard owner, founded in 1897 in Rüdesheim am Rhein
  • Trier association of vineyard owners of the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer founded, 1908
  • Club Baden natural wine auctioneer founded, 1910
  • Association of natural wine auctioneer in Hesse founded, 1900

The term natural wine should emphasize the particular standard that under the former Act had the wine wines which do not consciously shared the then common practice of adding sugar to increase the natural alcoholic strength. The Registry of Associations was, however, only 1926. Beginning of the 20th century, German wines were in great demand worldwide and were often more expensive than the still famous wines of the example great Chateaux of Bordeaux.

1934, the club was incorporated as part of the Nazi Gleichschaltung policy in the " Reichsnährstand ". In 1935 a second Constitution was approved, the advanced the goals of the association and concretized:

  • Regulation of conditions of Sale and Dates
  • Joint advertising
  • Exhibitions at home and abroad
  • Exchange of experience in the wine and in the wine treatment

The Second World War interrupted the work of the Association; wine sales came in large part to a halt because Jewish wine merchants were very important for the sale. Only in 1949 he took by Albert Biirklin his work formally again. 1955, the first vintage wine auction took place in Wiesbaden. The rules were tightened in the following years, however, brought the wine law of 1971 a severe setback for the club, which had to be renamed in association German predicate wine auctioneer eV ( VDPV ) to take account of the wine law. In particular, the exclusive definition of wine quality by Oechsle and the divisional or regional sites - regulation should facilitate the work in the following large-scale producers and allow for the customer externally visible qualities disappear.

Under Peter Weymarn of the association changed its name to the current name. He also turned into an association of wineries. The organization of wine auctions pushed into the background. A change in statutes directed in 1972 the Association of German VDP ( variable data printing ) renamed club on image building and promotion of the quality pursuit of. In 1978, Erwein Count Matuschka Greiffenclau the Presidency, in 1982 it was renamed the Association of German predicate and quality wineries.

From 1990, under Michael Prinz zu Salm- Salm, the VDP and thus its members were sworn to organic wine growing and asked to changed the operating practice. From 1994, no large-scale situations designations longer be used, and from the predicate read hand reading is mandatory. In 2002, the General Assembly adopted Rules for Classification of First growths and Grand Crus.

The President of the Association of German VDP ( variable data printing ) since 2007 Steffen Christmann. In May 2012, the federal office of the Association moved to the listed wine storage building of the former customs and inland port in the city of Mainz.

Also in 2012, adopted the members unanimously approved a new classification to define the quality of the origin and do not like the wine law of 1971 it changed, after the must weight ( degree Oechsle ). The classification comprises a 4 level pyramid - in some regions only 3 steps - starting with the VDP.GUTSWEINEN, VDP.ORTSWEINEN, VDP.ERSTE LOCATION and LOCATION VDP.GROSSE. In the 3-level regions there is no VDP.ERSTE SITUATION. The VDP.GROSSE GREENHOUSE is the best dry wine from a VDP.GROSSEN SITUATION. The aim is that really the only outstanding documents will be named on the label. The wine law of 1971 reduced the list of documents of the past 30,000 documents in 4000 wholesale and retail locations. A " Piesporter Michel mountain" is such a big location, which implies that the wine comes from a small location, although this covers approximately 1,500 hectares and thus has no explanatory power. The classification also has the use of predicate names - only approved for fruit and sweet wines - Cabinet, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, Eiswein. Thus, these names get back their original meaning, which they had before the wine law of 1971. About the option of entering the old cadastral names and additionally protected designations of origin, the winemakers are their positions can further split and only the true fillets call VDP.GROSSE SITUATION. With three new admissions, the number of VDP Mitgliedsberiebe 2014 grew to over 200

Eagle grape

The grapes eagle is the symbol of the VDP association. It shows an eagle naturalistically depicted with a bunch of grapes in its beak. Since 2003 he is also represented as a seal on the bottle cap. It features wines from Association members and is a terroir dominated, artisanal winemaking indicate that excludes oak chips and limited the use of additives as a seal of approval. Wines from experimental cultivation of the VDP does not receive the seal. The display on the capsule is an icon that shows me the silhouette of an eagle grapes in the chest area.
