Verbenone denotes the two enantiomers ( )- verbenone and (-) - verbenone. There are colorless liquids with molecular formula C10H14O, which are among the monoterpene ketones. Both have a minty smell, which intensified when heated.

Occurrence and representation

Verbenone comes in the essential oils of rosemary before (Rosmarinus officinalis) and lemon verbena ( Verbena scent also, lemon verbena, Aloysia triphylla ). It is, together with the pheromone of the bark beetle verbenol. The attractant verbenol leads to the " gathering " of beetles on a tree; Verbenone finally sells the bark beetle to other, previously uninfested trees. The ketone can be synthesized from pinene.

Properties

Verbenone is flammable, the flashpoint is about 85 ° C. The substance is readily soluble in ethanol and other organic solvents, but almost insoluble in water.

Use

Verbenone is used as a fragrance and is also used as a remedy for the printer - bark beetle, where it acts as a repellent that deters the beetles.
