Vergobret

The Vergobret (Latin Vergobretus ) after Caesar was the holder of the highest office ( " the highest magistrate " ) among the Celtic Aedui. Literally translated, the word " law -maker ". He was, like the consuls in Rome, elected annually by the Druids, only had the Vergobret significantly more power: He chose life and death of tribal members ([... ] qui creatur annuus et vitae necisque in Suos all were potestatem ). A well-known Vergobretus was Diviciacus, who held the office in 58 BC.

According to J. F. Nagy kingship had been largely replaced by the system of government of the Vergobret, so even with the Aedui, Bituriges, Santones and Lexoviern, where there were two such officials after a Münzinschrift to Caesar's time with the Celtic tribes of Gaul. Certain structures in some strains, however, have yet to go to the last kingdom. Caesar also reported that Liscus, the Vergobret the Aedui, opposite him admitted despite his office to have less power than the more prestigious the tribe Dumnorix.

Vergobretus derives from Gaulish * ṷergobritos from which the urkeltischen elements * ṷerg (" work", " work " ) and * brit (" judgment " ) includes.
