Verkhneuralsk

Werchneuralsk (Russian Верхнеуральск ) is a town with 9457 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Chelyabinsk region in Russia.

Location

The city is situated on the eastern slope of the southern Urals. The Oblasthauptstadt Chelyabinsk is about 460 km away, the Magnitogorsk station (on the line Ufa Kartaly ) about 60 km. It is the administrative center of Rajons Werchneuralsk.

History

Werchneuralsk is the oldest city of Chelyabinsk Oblast. It was in the winter months around the turn of 1734/35 under the name Werchnejaizkaja (Russian Верхнеяицкая; Yaik was until 1755 the name of the river Ural ) was founded as a river port and fortress town on the so-called Ui - line. After the unsuccessful siege of the fortress by insurgents led by Pugachev Yemelyan 1774, the settlement received town rights in 1781 and was the administrative seat of its own Ujesds ( district ) within the province of Orenburg. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Werchneuralsk developed into a center of the textile industry, whose major products belonged to the so-called Orenburg cloth.

Economy

Today Werchneuralsk is the center of an agricultural region and influenced by the food industry and wood processing companies.

Attractions

Since Werchneuralsk was in contrast to the neighboring towns, despite its former importance in the Soviet era not developed an industrial center, large parts of the historic buildings have been preserved. St Nicholas Cathedral ( Никольский собор ) in the city center was built in 1875 with funds from the local merchant family, designed by Konstantin Thon Rytow. Furthermore, the large number of historic residential and commercial buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as the trading numbers and the former parade ground of the Cossacks are worth mentioning.
