Verkhnevilyuysk

Werchnewiljuisk (Russian Верхневилюйск; Yakut Үөһээ Бүлүү, Üöhee Bülüü ) is a village ( selo ) in the Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia) in Russia with 6457 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The village is located about 500 km as the crow west-northwest of the capital of Republic of Yakutsk on the right bank of the largest left tributary of the Lena Wiljui.

Werchnewiljuisk is the administrative center of Ulus Werchnewiljuiski. The village is the seat and only town in the rural community ( selskoje posselenije ) Werchnewiljuiski Nasleg.

History

As Cossacks winter camp, the town was first mentioned in 1637. At a larger village, it developed about the 1780s and in 1835 an independent administrative unit. Since 1935 Werchnewiljuisk administrative seat of Ulus ( Rajons ) is in its present form.

Werchnewiljuisk is located on section Mirny - Yakutsk the highway A331 Wiljui. The road goes there from the left bank upstream on the right bank downstream of there about 1 km wide river in summer by car ferry and in winter a ice road.

At the northwestern outskirts of the village there is a small airport ( ICAO code UENI ).
