Verner Weckman

Verner Weckman Johan ( born July 26, 1882 in Loviisa, † February 22, 1968 in Helsinki) was a Finnish wrestler.

Career

Verner Weckman grew up in Helsinki and began there in 1902 at the Helsingin Atleettiklubi (HAK ) with the rings. He wrestled exclusively in the true European Greco- Roman style. It took only two years until he won his first Finnish championship in the heavyweight division. In 1905 he went to study at the Technical University in Karlsruhe and was launched in 1906 at the German championships, where he finished in 2nd place behind Nuremberg Ulrich Gemmel at heavyweight.

A year earlier he had gone at the World Championships in Duisburg at the start and there was the world title won in nine German wrestlers. The fact that this success was no fluke, he proved at the 1906 Summer Olympics in Athens. Verner Weckman was Olympic champion in the middleweight division. In the final battle, he defeated while the Austrian Rudolf Lindmayer. In the competition of the three category winners, he was defeated by the winner of the heavyweight class Søren Marinus Jensen from Denmark and won over Watzl Rudolf of Austria, which he had won a silver medal.

In 1908 he was in London in the light heavyweight (up to 93 kg body weight) once Olympic champion ahead of his compatriot Yrjö Saarela and Carl Jensen from Denmark.

After these games, Verner Weckman resigned and worked as an engineer in Finland.
