Veronika Cherkasova

Weranika Tscharkassawa ( born January 12, 1959 in Minsk; † 20 October 2004 in Minsk, Belarus ) was an oppositional Belarusian journalist.

Weranika Tscharkassawa worked for several opposition newspapers in the 1980s for the BDG, from 1995 to 2003 for the Belorusskaya Gazeta and last 2003-2004 Salidarnasc (' solidarity ').

She was especially active with research in journalism and wrote about social issues, including issues of religious sects and Roma Communities in Belarus. But just as she published several articles on illegal arms trade between Alexander Lukashenko's Belarus and Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

Tscharkassawa was assassinated on 20 October 2004 with about twenty stab wounds. An offender has not been discovered. The official inquiry was set in December 2005, resumed in February 2006 and ended again on 14 March 2006, there were allegedly missing criminal suspects.
