Features
The bulbous egg-shaped housing has a length of only 1.7 to 1.9 mm and width 1.2 mm. There are up to 5 turns formed, which are offset from each other deep sutures. The mouth has max. 4 small projections (so-called "teeth" ) ( a parietal a columellarer palatal and two ), but there may also be fewer teeth. The color of the body is reddish brown and the surface is glossy. The housings are almost smooth except for a weak regular Anwachsstreifung.
Similar Species
The case is similar to the Blanken 's whorl snail ( Vertigo genesii ). The housing is somewhat less conically, and the mouth is toothless.
Geographical distribution and habitat
The species is widespread in Scandinavia to the 64 ° latitude. In Ireland there is a larger isolated occurrence. In England, Scotland and Wales only very small occurrences are known. In the south, the range extends, mostly in small deposits to Northern Germany, Southern Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and in the alpine regions of Austria and Switzerland, in the east to north-western Russia into it. The type is interpreted as a glacial relict. Recently, the species was also found in the Central Altai.
The animals live on the edge of calcareous fens and swamps. They prefer a pH between 7 and 8 and as constant as possible water level. The banks should be passed with rushes ( Juncus ) and sedges ( Carex ). Little is known about the lifestyle and diet.
Taxonomy
The taxon was described in 1925 by Vasily Adolfovich Lindholm as a subspecies Vertigo genesii geyeri first time. Some authors subdivide the genus into two subgenera Vertigo Vertigo ( Vertigo ) OF Müller, 1773 and Vertigo ( Vertilla ) Moquin - Tandon, 1856th In this subgenus outline is provided Tetradentate the whorl snail Vertigo in the genus ( Vertilla ).
Endangering
The Tetradentate whorl snail is endangered by the destruction of their habitat. It is in Germany on the "Red List" and is threatened with extinction as ( hazard category 1) classified.
