Vețel

Vetel [ vetsel ] (deprecated Vitel, literally " calf"; Witzel German, Hungarian Vecel ) is a municipality in the district of Hunedoara in Transylvania, Romania.

Geographical location

The municipality is located in southwestern Vetel of the Transylvanian Basin, north of the Poiana Rusca - Mountains. At the mouth of the brooks Vetel and Vulcez - left tributaries of the Mureş ( Maros ) - in the center of the circle Hunedoara, the place on the European road 68 and the double-track line Arad - Alba Iulia is located approximately 13 kilometers west of the district capital Deva ( Deva ) away.

Of the total area of the municipality of 35.86 % is agricultural land, 58.36 % is forested.

History

The place Vetel was first mentioned in records in 1278 or 1371 ( according to different data). The history of settlement in the region is, however, according to reports by F. Kenner, I Hampel, A. Koch, G. Téglás, I. Andrieşecu and others to the early Bronze Age. Many of these finds are in museums in Bucharest and Budapest. Furthermore, were made on the grounds of the resort numerous finds from the Roman period. In the Middle Ages Vetel was a Hungarian settlement. In the 15th century settled here also Romanians and there was a Romanian village. Since the 16th century the place is inhabited almost exclusively by Romanians.

On the grounds of the eingemeindeten village Mintia ( Bayersdorf ) from 1960 to 1970 one of the largest thermal power plants was built in Romania ( 45 ° 55 'N, 22 ° 49' O45.9164122.82156, " SC Electro Centrale Deva SA "). For several years, documented by the debt of the power plant negative impacts on the environment through water pollution, soil damage and destruction of vegetation.

After the decline of the mining industry, the residents now live mainly from agriculture.

Population

In the 1850 census, lived on the territory of the present municipality of 2,583 people. 2,400 of these were Romanians, 126 Roma, 43 Hungary, ten German and four others. The highest population ( 4,090 ) - at the same time the Romanians ( 3818 ) and of Hungary ( 194) - was reached in 1977. The highest number of Roma in 1850 and the Germans ( 26 ) 1900 counted. In addition, 24 inhabitants in 1880, 1910 and 1992, three residents and 2002 residents called the Slovaks, 2002, two residents than Ukrainians. 2002 there were in the entire community Vetel 2,760 people, of whom 2,527 Romanians, 129 Hungarians, 98 Roma and three German.

  • The wooden church Cuvioasa Paraschiva, built in 1790, is a listed building.

  • In eingemeindeten Lesnic village ( village guard ), the Romanian Orthodox Church Sf. Nicolae was about 1400 by Dobre Românul ( a Romanian serfs ) donated, who was knighted by Luxembourg for his bravery by King Sigismund; is a listed building.
  • Built in eingemeindeten village Mintia the Hungarian Reformed Church Hall ( built in the 16th century) and the estate of Gyulay Ferencz, 1642, 1834 rebuilt; are under monument protection.
