Penitential Procession

Every year on the last Sunday of every July in Furnes a penitential procession held, in which the penitents, dressed in the face concealing garments, heavy crosses and figurines drag. This tradition originated in the 17th century, was cast as Furnes by the Spaniards.

If ' t' Bomtje "suggests the penitential procession the bell of St. Nicholas Church Point 15:30 clock, the shops in the funfair on the Grote Markt are closed. Fanfares sound. Before each group proclaims a sign of the biblical scenes, which are adjusted in period costumes. An angel cited in each case the relevant Bible passages, such as the Fall, the stable of Bethlehem or Pilate. About 200 masked, partly barefooted penitents drag up to 25 -pound crosses. Rainer Maria Rilke wrote in 1906: "It is only one means, of course, just these penitents were lacking in seriousness and attitude. But the more one sees them again, the sincere and ill- will you wear, the more comes under the full sun the cross over them, with all his Sichschwermachen. "
