The Cima di Vezzana (also Cima della Vezzana or short Vezzana ) is with 3192 meters slm the highest elevation of Pala in the Italian Dolomites.

Location

The mountain rises due east on the Rolle Pass ( 1980 m ) in the northern Pala. It forms the border between the provinces of Trentino and Belluno in the west to the east. By the Passo Travignolo ( 3925 m) the Vezzana is in the southwest of Cimon della Pala separated ( 3184 m). Neighboring peak to the south is Il Nuvovo ( 3075 m). In the north of Passo di Val Strut separates ( 2870 m) the Vezzana of the Cima dei Bureloni ( 3130 m). While the eastern flank of the mountain is marked by heaps of rubble, the Vezzana falls to the west from steep rock walls. Below the west walls lies with the Ghiacciaio del Travignolo a small glacier. From the northeast of the Vezzana in Val di Val Strut Strut located Ghiacciaio however, only small firn fields are obtained.

Bases and routes

The most important starting point for ascents of Vezzana are the Rolle Pass and San Martino di Castrozza in the west of Pala. In the northeast of the mountain from the village of Gares is accessible. As a managed bases are in the north west, the Baita Segantini ( 2170 m) and to the south the Rosetta hut ( 2581 m, cable car from San Martino). In addition, there are two bivouacs in the area of the mountain, the Bivouac Fiamme Gialle ( 3005 m) at the Cimon della Pala and the Bivouac Giorgio Brunner ( 2667 m) in the Val Strut.

Unlike many other peaks of the Pala Vezzana applies because of their brittle rock is not as important climbing a mountain, but is known mainly through its two normal routes. One of these increases lead as marked trail in the difficulty I ( UIAA ) from Passo Travignolo to the summit. The easiest ascent to the pass leads from Rifugio Rosetta through the Val dei Cantoni, but he can be reached via the Travignologletscher via ferrata Bolver - Lugli (difficulty CD) or from the north. The second summit climb leads from the east through the Val Strut on the Vezzana, with climbs in difficulty I and the short via ferrata Gabitta D' Ignoti be overcome. As a starting point for this route Rifugio Rosetta or Gares are suitable.

In winter, the Vezzana can also be mounted on a ski tour. Possible Skianstiege lead over the Travignoligletscher, through the Valle dei cantoni or through the Val Strut.

When the Cima di Vezzana was climbed for the first time, was still considered the Cimon della Pala as the highest peak of Pala. So the first man to climb Douglas W. Freshfield and Charles C. Tucker did not know June 23, 1878 that they stood on the highest summit Pala. They reached the Vezzana of the roller pass over the Travignologletscher.
