Vic Ash

Victor " Vic" Ash ( born March 9, 1930 in London ) is a British jazz clarinetist and saxophonist of the Oldtime Jazz and Swing.

Life and work

Vic Ash began his professional career in 1951 in the band of Kenny Baker, in which he played until 1953. 1953-1956 he worked at Vic Lewis, then he accompanied Hoagy Carmichael and Cab Calloway in their tours of England. He was in the 1950s, a favorite in the fan polls the magazine Melody Maker; During this time he also had a radio show titled Sunday Break, was discussed in the jazz and religion. In 1954 he recorded an album with singer Maxine Sullivan in London with his quartet. 1957-59 undertook Ash toured the United States with its own ensemble; his ensemble represented in 1959 as the only British jazz band at the Newport Jazz Festival. In 1960 he played with Harry Klein, Brian Dee, among others in the formation The Jazz Five.

Ash remained active for many years in the British jazz scene, playing with smaller and larger formations as well as the BBC Big Band. He accompanied Frank Sinatra on his tours in Europe and the Middle East from 1970 until Sinatra's death. Ash has published numerous albums on the label Pye Nixa and MGM, who are now out of print.
