Vicki Baum
Vicki Baum, Vicky tree, actually Hedwig Baum ( born January 24, 1888 in Vienna, † August 29 1960 in Hollywood) was an Austrian musician ( harpist ) and one of the most successful writers of the Weimar Republic.
Life
The daughter of the Jewish government officials Hermann Baum and his wife Mathilde nee Donath visited the Pädagogium and trained from 1898 to 1904 for the harpist at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music. After an engagement of the Symphony Orchestra of the Vienna Concert Verein she came in 1913 as a harpist to Darmstadt, where she acted as Grand Ducal court and chamber musician. Later she was in Kiel (1916 /17), Hanover ( 1917-1923 ) and Mannheim musically active.
From 1914 she began to write the way, at first incognito. In 1919 she published as " Vicki Baum " her first work Early shadows. From 1926 to 1931 she was publishing company employee and magazine editor in Berlin at Ullsteinhaus.

In 1932 she moved then on to California, probably for political reasons.
Tree books were the book burning in Germany in 1933 to the victim. At the University of Rostock their works were mounted on 5 May 1933, a " pillory ". It acquired U.S. citizenship in 1938 and published other works in English.
1949 Vicki Baum traveled Europe: Portugal, France, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium, but not Germany. She died in 1960 in Los Angeles. Her numerous novels, many of which were filmed and translated into several languages , today laid.
Vicki Baum was married from 1909 to 1913 with the writer and journalist Max Prel ( born July 28, 1878). In 1916 she married the conductor Richard Lert. The marriage produced sons Wolfgang ( * 1917 ) and Peter ( b. 1921 ).
Her novel The multiplication tables / Rendezvous in Paris was filmed in 1982 by Gabi Kubach Hotel Shanghai in 1996 by Peter Patzak.
Honors
In 1983 there was a short TV portrait of Gisela Reich titled Vicki Baum - " A first-class second-rate writer ."
1999 in Vienna the place to Wiedner Hauptstrasse, corner Waaggasse, named after her Vicki Tree Square.
