Vicovu de Sus

Vicovu de Sus ( German Oberwikow ) is a town in the district of Suceava in Romania.

Location

Vicovu de Sus is located in Bukovina, close to the Ukrainian border in the valley of the River Suceava, on the north side of the mountain Obcina Mare. The county capital of Suceava is located about 55 km south-east.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1436 under the name Jicovu de Sus. Ştefan cel Mare bought in 1466 (Stefan the Great), Prince of Moldavia, the village and donated it to the monastery of Putna.

After the Principality of Moldavia increasingly came under Ottoman influence, Bukovina in 1775 part of Austria-Hungary was. 1787 settled in the village of families from the Rhineland, from Franconia, Baden and Württemberg. Mostly lived in the place, however, continue Romanians.

After the First World War, the Bukovina and thus Vicovu de Sus part of Romania. In 2004, the place the status of a city.

Population

As of the 2002 census lived in Vicvovu de Sus 14,125 people, including 13,736 Romanians and 377 Roma.

Traffic

By Vicovu de Sus the railway line Rădăuţi - Brodina runs, are located on the two railway stations within the city limits ( Vicovu de Sus and Bivolăria ). There are regular bus services to Rădăuţi ( Radautz ).
