Victor Danielsen

Victor Danielsen ( born March 28, 1894 in Søldarfjørður; † February 2nd 1961 in Fuglafjørður ) was a Faroese missionary of the Brethren movement and the first translator of the Bible into the Faroese language.

Victor Danielsen was instrumental in the establishment of the Brethren movement and its present strength in the Faroe Islands after it was introduced by William Gibson Sloan end of the 19th century.

Life

Victor Danielsen was born in the settlement Søldarfjørður on Eysturoy. In 1911 he began studying at the Teachers' Training College Tórshavn and put 1914 teachers exam from. In the same year he was hired as a teacher in schools in Søldarfjørður, Glyvrar and Lamba, but announced after half a year to respond to the call as a missionary.

1916, Danielsen broke from the established national church and turned to the Free Church Brøðrasamkoman ( Brethren ) to. In 1920 he married and moved to Fuglafjørður, where he worked as a preacher and missionary for the Brethren movement together with his wife.

In 1930 it was decided at a meeting of the Brethren in Tórshavn, to contact Victor Danielsen and ask him to the Galatians to be translated into Faroese. From the result, the community was so excited that was commissioned Danielsen also with the rest of the New Testament. The translation was published in March 1937, a few weeks before Jacob Dahl's authorized edition, who worked independently of Danielsen for the People's Church.

After the work on the New Testament Victor Danielsen continued the translation of the Old Testament, and in 1939 he had completed the work that was based on translations from other modern languages. In this they differed from Dahl's work, which is a translation of the Hebrew original texts. Because of the Second World War came out Danielsen's complete Bible translation until 1949 and was the first in his language. The translation of Jacob Dahl and Kristian Osvald VIDERO was not published until 1961.

Victor Danielsen was considered unusually energetic and productive man. In addition to his translation of the Bible he wrote 27 hymns and translated more than 800 Moreover, he wrote two novels spiritual content. He died at the age of 66 years in Fuglafjørður.
