Victor Fatio

Victor Fatio ( born November 28, 1838 in Geneva as Victor Fatio de Beaumont, † March 19, 1906 ) was a Swiss zoologist.

Life

Fatios interest in animals was awakened early, when he was allowed to accompany his father Gustave Fatio de Beaumont on his hunts. He studied physiology in Zurich, Berlin and Leipzig, and obtained the title of a Ph. D.. 1861 he fell ill with typhoid fever. After his recovery in 1862 he went to Paris and took part in the courses of Henri Milne -Edwards ( 1800-1885 ) at the Muséum national d' histoire naturelle, where he devoted himself to the study of zoology.

When in 1874 the phylloxera was introduced in Switzerland, Fatio conducted research and suggested to the world's first convention to combat phylloxera, which took place in Lausanne in 1877. The results of his research and the Congress in 1878 published under the title Etat de la question phylloxérique en Europe en 1877. He also wrote several publications on the phylloxera in Switzerland and Savoy.

Between 1869 and 1904 his standard work of Vertebres Faune de la Suisse appeared on the vertebrates of Switzerland.

Together with Theophil Studer (1845-1922) wrote Victor Fatio the Catalogue des oiseaux de la Suisse ( Catalogue of Swiss birds), but from 1889 to 1901 appeared of which only the first three books. More 16 issues of this series were published until 1956 by other authors.

Animal species such as the Albock (Coregonus fatioi ), the Pfärrig (Coregonus confusus ), and the Alpine - Kleinwühlmaus ( Pitymys multiplex ) were described by Victor Fatio first time scientifically.
