Rangel also denied all three games, who completed the Mexicans in the 1978 World Cup and was also the only player of the Mexican national team, which at that - from the perspective of Mexicans so disappointing - WM managed a field goal; the other had achieved Arturo Vázquez Ayala penalty. However, Rangel's star began to decline rapidly after this World Cup. For from now on he came only occasionally in the national team as substitutes for, scoring no more international goal.

Overall, Rangel came on 17 international appearances, in which he scored seven goals. For the last time he wore the dress of the national team on 22 January 1980 in a friendly match against Czechoslovakia, which Mexico won 1-0.
