Vieira's titi

Callicebus vieirai is described in 2012, primate of the species of titi monkeys within the family of Sakiaffen ( Pitheciidae ). The species was da Cunha Vieira (1897-1958) named after Carlos Octaviano, a mom lodges ( mammal watchers ) and curator of the mammal collection at the Museu de Zoologia the Universidade de São Paulo provided by 1941 until 1958.

Distribution and habitat

The species is known only from three separate areas in northern Mato Grosso and Pará. The four type specimens were caught on the rivers Teles Pires and Rio Iriri. The third area in which no specimens were caught, but a female and a male were only sighted, is the small town of Juina in northwestern Mato Grosso. The habitat in which the holotype was caught, is a tropical evergreen rain forest with lianas and medium-sized ( about 20 m) and some large trees (30 to 35 m ). The undergrowth is relatively dense, the forest floor is thick. In swamps near grow showy Buriti Palm ( Mauritia flexuosa ).

Features

Callicebus vieirai is a medium- sized species of Callicebus moloch group with a bright, gray -brown coloration on the head, the neck, the back, the tail and the top of the arms and legs and shaped by the agouti pattern hair. Hands, feet and tail tip are white, orange throat and belly. From other species of Callicebus moloch Callicebus vieirai group is distinguished by the white hair around the dark face.
