Viesīte

Viesīte ( German Corner Earl ) is a small city in southeastern Latvia, which received city rights in 1928.

History

The town developed in the 19th century around the corner Good counts, where the streets Jaunjelgava - Jēkabpils and Aknīste - Nereta cross. During the First World War, the German army built a narrow gauge railway with Viesīte as a hub. This narrow gauge railway was operated on and a small steam engine is still on display in the town center.

Viesītes novads

In 2009, the city and four surrounding municipalities united to an administrative district. ( See also: Administrative divisions of Latvia ). 2010, reported 4614 inhabitants.
