Viévy

Viévy is a commune with 339 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Côte- d'Or in the Burgundy region. The inhabitants are called Vétivicois.

Geography

The community consists of 14 hamlets Viévy: Dracy- Chalas, Chevigny, La Chaume, Thoreille - l - Deffend (also Defens ), Morey, Chavenne, Uchey, Poncey, La Bresse, Ebruyères, Essertenne, Visignot and Veuvrailles. The highest point of the municipality lies between 435 m Dracy- Chalas and Visignot, the deepest 316 m at the mill of Auxerain, on the banks of the river Lacanche. By municipality performs a Roman road (now Autun ) joined once Augustodunum with Alesia. Today this is part of the Route 16 Departmental

History

A consecration inscription for the Celtic god Alisanus was found in the hamlet Visignot; the place was at that time in the tribal territory of the Aedui.

Viévy was known as Vetus Vicum to 840, this name is the reason for the current name of the inhabitants as Vétivicois. Under the patronage of Saint -Christophe, the parish area to the diocese of Autun, and the Bailiwick and the salt tax authority of Arnay -le- Duc was.

The population of Viévy decreased from 549 inhabitants ( 1962) to 340 ( 2009).

Attractions

The Château d' Auxerain whose time of origin is not possible to identify clearly belonged in the 14th century, the Hugues du Bois, " chevalier, conseiller, cham bellan, bailli de Charollois, seigneur d' Ausserain ", an officer of King Philip III. of Burgundy. The Château du Deffend been mentioned yet in 1461, it was in the hamlet Deffend (now Thoreille - l - Deffend ).

The parish church of Saint -Christophe is built in the Romanesque style.

The Chapelle Saint Amand was built in the 18th century in the hamlet Dracy- Chalas. Legend has it that the sound of chapel bells keeps storms.
