In liturgical terms:
- A part of the monastic hours prayer, prayed at night or early in the morning. See: Matins and also Mette.
- A " vigil " in front of large festivals, especially the Easter Vigil, the mother of all vigils ( "Full Vigil " )
- In the broader sense of the day before a holiday, for example, December 24 as Vigil of Christmas. However, the forms were measured by the liturgical reform for Vigil days (which were already in the morning celebrated ) largely abolished.
- The funeral ceremony the night before the funeral; also the funeral service the evening before the year day
