Viipuri Province

The Viipuri Province (Finnish Viipurin lääni, swedish Viborg County ) was from 1812 to 1945 a province ( lääni ) Finland in the historic landscape Karelia. She had Viipuri ( Vyborg today ). Than capital and included the present landscape of South Karelia, the eastern part of Kymi and the time associated with areas of Finland on the Karelian Isthmus and north of Lake Ladoga (so-called Ladoga Karelia )

While the membership of Finland to Sweden, there had been 1634 to 1721 already a province of Viipuri - Savonlinna ( Viborg Nyslotts och län). The area of the later Viipuri Province fell in 1721 and 1743 to Russia. After also the rest of Finland was in 1809 fell to Russia, the so-called Altfinnland in 1812 the newly established autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland annexed and converted into the province of Viipuri. After the end of the Winter War, Finland had lost in 1940 the bulk of the province of Viipuri, including the city of Viipuri ceded to the Soviet Union. In the Continuation War Finland conquered the territory in 1941 back in the meantime, but resigned in 1944 from final. As a result, remaining on the Finnish side parts of the province of Viipuri were converted to the province of Kymi 1945.
