Vikram Pandit

Vikram Pandit ( born January 14, 1957 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India) is an American manager.

Life

Pandit was born in Nagpur, in Maharashtra State in 1957. In 1973 he moved to the U.S. and became an American citizen. He studied at Columbia University in New York and earned a Bachelor of Science in 1976 and 1977, the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1986 and Ph.D. in macroeconomics and financial markets.

Since 1983 he worked as an investment banker for Morgan Stanley and was President and Chief Operating Officer (COO ) of the Institutional Securities and Investment Banking Group at Morgan Stanley (2000-2004), where he was responsible for the overall management of the group and to trade, sales and infrastructure aspects of the business concentrated.

Previously, he worked as General Manager and Head of Worldwide Institutional Equities Division (1994-2000), and as General Manager and Head of U.S. Equity Syndicate (1990-1994) for Morgan Stanley. Pandit left Morgan Stanley in 2005 with a few colleagues and founded in April 2006, the hedge fund Old Lane Partners, the Citigroup bought in July 2007 for 800 million U.S. dollars. First, he was responsible for alternative investments at Citigroup. In October 2007, a further investment divisions were added.

Pandit is a member of the board of Columbia University, Columbia Business School, the Indian School of Business and The Trinity School. He is a former board member of NASDAQ (2000-2003), and the New York City Investment Fund.

On 11 December 2007, Pandit was in place of Sir Winfried Bischoff interim CEO, the new CEO of Citigroup. He succeeds Charles Prince, who was on 5 November 2007, resigned due to unexpectedly poor business results, mainly due to tens of billions of depreciation by the subprime mortgage crisis.

On October 16, 2012 Pandit resigned as CEO, and resigned all Board offices. As Pandits successor as CEO Michael Corbat was elected by the Board.
