Villa El Salvador

Villa El Salvador is a district of Lima, Peru with 367 436 inhabitants and an area of 35.46 km ² ( 2005). Mayor of the district is Guido Iñigo Peralta.

In 1971 it was occupied government lands by families from the rural areas of Peru. Following violent clashes between squatters and police the city administration Limas accepted the occupations, it was the Villa El Salvador.

Since June 1, 1983 Villa El Salvador is an official district of Lima.

In 1987 El Salvador was for self-government, which built its residents with volunteer work, the Award for Concord Prince of Asturias Foundation. Also in 1987 Villa El Salvador was awarded the United Nation " Messenger of Peace " ( Mensajera de La Paz ).

María Elena Moyano Delgado was then mayor of Villa El Salvador.

The football team of Villa El Salvador is " Defensor Villa del Mar" which " Iván Elias Moreno " plays in the local stadium.

Twinning

Since September 24, 2006 Villa El Salvador is twinned the German town of Tübingen in Baden- Württemberg.
