Villers-Carbonnel

Villers- Carbonnel is a commune with 323 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region of northern France. The municipality belongs to the canton Peronne and is part of the Communauté de communes de la Haute Somme.

Geography

The department at the intersection of roads D1029 (part of the Chaussée Brune skin) and D1017 ( former National Road 17 ), this community is located 8.5 km southwest of Peronne. The Valley of the Somme limits the municipality to the east. The ponds of the upper Somme in the municipal area are known for their eel. To the community includes the hamlet of Pont- les -Brie and Horgny.

The no longer operated passenger railway line from Saint- Just-en -Chaussée to Douai via Chaulnes and Peronne through Villers- Carbonnel.

History

In La Sole d' Happlincourt a settlement site was excavated from the Neolithic period. Here, a Neolithic figurine ( la dame de Villers- Carbonnel ) was discovered.

At Villers- Carbonnel came in 1916 during an air battle of the highly decorated German aviator Kurt Wintgens killed.

Attractions

  • Are the ruins of Castle Happlaincourt from the 13th century, which was destroyed in the First World War at the Battle of the Somme in the Somme. The ruins are registered in the list of Monuments historiques since 1926.
  • The church of Saint -Quentin has abstract glass window to a design by Pierre Dmitrienko ( 1925-1974 ).
  • Distillery, later chemical factory.
  • At the Chaussée Brunehaut is a military cemetery ( Nécropole national).
