Villette-d'Anthon

Villette- d'Anthon is a commune with 4404 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Isère, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

The municipality is located in the extreme northwest of the department of Isère. Villette- d'Anthon is located on the Rhone, near the Ainmündung. The municipality belongs to the Communauté de communes de Lyon Porte Dauphinoise Satolas.

History

After the conquest of Gaul, Julius Caesar was along the Rhône military post build. The region was shaped by several conquests. First, the area was owned by the Allobrogians who lived in the 1st and 2nd centuries BC here. In the hamlet Asnières there is still a Celtic grave mounds. This was followed by the gentlemen of the Burgundians, the Merovingian, Carolingian and again a Burgundian domination. Then, the area passed into the possession of the Holy Roman Empire before it was transferred to the Dauphiné and finally to the Kingdom of France. In the 17th century there were only a few houses around the church. The religious history is closely linked with that of Chavanoz because the local priest was also priest of the church of Saint Martin de Villette. In addition, there was at Mons and Asnières each a chapel. In the district Sous l'Eglise to further find the remains of an old church. The place was - not only in name - strongly tied to the fortress town of Anthon. Thanks to its excellent location near the Grand Lyon, the village was not affected by the rural exodus. Since 1998, there has in place an organization that fights for the rediscovery of cultural heritage.
