The Vilnius Airport ( Lithuanian Vilniaus oro uostas ) is the airport of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius and the largest of the four international airports in Lithuania.

History

The first terminal of the airport was built in the present territory of the airport in 1932. This, however, has not survived. Aircraft from the terminal then flew the route Warsaw - Vilnius - Riga - Tallinn. During World War II, the airport was used as a military airfield before it was reopened on July 17, 1944 for the civilian air traffic.

Soviet times the airport from the Aeroflot was operated as a domestic airport, which also targets the Asian part of the Soviet Union were as fly as Tashkent.

In 1991, he was placed under an operating company of the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and in 1993 inaugurated a new terminal. The airport was rebuilt in accordance with the provisions of the Schengen Agreement and expanded. A new terminal was opened in October 2007 with the aim to be able to handle three million passengers annually.

Since 1 May 2013, the Lithuanian Air Lituanica has its base at the airport.

Destinations

Vilnius is as of November 2013, flew directly from German speaking countries: Lufthansa flies from Frankfurt, Air Lituanica from Berlin- Tegel and from Munich, Austrian Airlines from Vienna and Ryanair from Weeze Airport and from Bremen Airport. Other airlines are Aer Lingus, Finnair, SAS Scandinavian Airlines; Objectives are Amsterdam, Dublin, Copenhagen, London, Paris and Rome. Other international goals are achieved with Air Baltic via Riga airport.

Approach

The airport is located about seven kilometers south of the city center and is accessible by train, bus, taxi or car line.

Bus

The operator of public transport in Vilnius VVT offers four lines that connect the airport. On average, every 10 minutes a bus into the city center.

  • Line 3G: Vilnius airport - center - Fabijoniškės
  • Line 88: Airport Vilnius - Old Town - Europos aikštė

Station Airport Vilnius

On 2 October 2008, the breakpoint Vilnius Airport ( Lithuanian Vilniaus oro uosto Geležinkelio Stotis ) was opened near the terminal building. This Vilnius is the only airport in the Baltic States with direct access to the railway network.
