Vimy
Vimy is a commune and canton capital with a population of 4305 ( effective 1st January 2011) in the Pas -de- Calais, in the Nord -Pas -de -Calais.
Geography
Vimy is located in the northern French coal basin about halfway between Lens and Arras. The village lies at the foot of a mountain range, which is called crête de Vimy. The neighboring communities are Farbus, Thélus and Givenchy -en- Gohelle.
History
During the First World War, the ridge of Vimy especially in the spring and fall of 1915 and spring of 1917 was hard -fought. At the battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917 succeeded in Canadian associations of the British Expeditionary Force, take off the German army most of the height. At this important event in Canadian history is remembered with the nearby Canadian National Vimy Memorial.
