Vin Santo

Vin Santo ( holy wine translated ) is a classic dessert wine from the region of Tuscany and of Santorini. The specialty wine produced in the traditional way of air-dried, teilrosinierten grapes of the white Trebbiano and Malvasia. Using red Sangiovese grape, the rose Occhio di Pernice variant arises ( to German eye of the partridge ).

There are two DOC areas that are responsible for the Vin Santo DOC Val d' Arbia in the area of Brunello di Montalcino southeast of Siena and DOC Colli dell'Etruria Centrale in the area of Chianti. However, the majority of Vin Santo produced in Tuscany falls under any DOC status. In the DOC Val d'Arbia, a share of 75 % Trebbiano and in the DOC Colli dell'Etruria Centrale is prescribed a share of 50 %. The wine can be stored at good quality 8 to 20 years. Good qualities are obtained for about ten euros per bottle, top qualities are much more expensive. At Vin Santo like Biscotti di Prato / biscotti are served and dipped into the wine.

Outside Italy, Vin Santo is produced on the Greek island of Santorini, but the local Vin Santo has an independent tradition.
