Cartari was Jean Seznec According probably a protégé of the Dukes of Ferrara. In his work Imagini degli dei degli antichi colla sposizione ("Images depicting the gods of the ancients " ) of 1556 he cites as one of his sources Lilio Gregorio Giraldi 's De deis gentium et varia historia multiplex, which was published in 1548. Despite the success of this predecessor Cartaris work was due to its lively woodcut illustrations of the ancient gods that are to come from a certain Bolognino Zaltieri also popular. It focuses on the iconography of the gods and declared their clothes, their attitudes and attributes. Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo should in turn use that work. The antiquary and philologist Lorenzo Pignoria added to the plant in the editions from 1615 notes and additions and, remarkably, a second part with images of the gods of the Indians (Seconda Parte delle Imagini de gli Dei Indiani ), a short series of images of Mexican and Japanese deities. Joachim von Sandrart takes in his Teutsche Academie regarding Cartaris work that he publishes in 1680 in a translation that is provided surprisingly with new illustrations.
