Vincenzo Vannutelli

Vincenzo Cardinal Vannutelli ( born December 5, 1836 in Palestrina, the Papal States, † July 9, 1930 in Rome) was Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Vincenzo Vannutelli, younger brother of Cardinal Serafino Vannutelli, studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University and received on 23 December 1860, the sacrament of Holy Orders. In 1875 he was called by Pope Pius IX. appointed Apostolic prothonotary. On January 23, 1880, he was called by Pope Leo XIII. appointed Titular Archbishop of Sardes and appointed Vicar Apostolic of Constantinople Opel (Turkey). He received his episcopal consecration on February 2, 1880 Giovanni Cardinal Simeoni. On 22 December 1882 he was Apostolic Internuncio in Brazil and on October 4, 1883 Apostolic Nuncio of Portugal.

Pope Leo XIII. took him on December 30, 1889 as a Cardinal on pectore in the College of Cardinals. His public proclamation as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Silvestro in Capite took place on 23 June 1890.

As of May 1891, he was prosecuted ex officio of the Roman Curia and in 1892 the prefect. On December 16, 1896, he became archpriest of the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. In 1898 he took part in a Eucharistic Congress in Brussels as papal legate. On April 19, 1900 he was elevated to Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina and 1902 was appointed Prefect of the Congregation Council. After Leo's death, Cardinal Vannutelli took part in the conclave in 1903. In 1904 he left as a legacy to Armagh, to attend the inauguration of the St. Patrick 's Cathedral. Pope Pius X appointed him in 1908 as prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the Supreme Court of the Roman Curia. He also sent him to several Eucharistic congresses that took place during his pontificate. After the Pope's death, he took part in the conclave of 1914. Benedict XV. appointed him in 1914 as prefect of the Congregation for the ceremonies.

On December 6, 1915 appointed Benedict XV. Vannutelli cardinal dean and thus also to the cardinal bishop of Ostia, a post which he held until his death. 1916 also he was appointed Pro- Datar of the Apostolic Datarie. After Benedict's death, he called the cardinals together for Conclave 1922. Pope Pius XI. entrusted him with the preparations for the Jubilee Year 1925. Five years later Vincenzo Vannutelli died after a short illness with 93 years in Rome. He was at that time the oldest member of the College of Cardinals.
