Viola Meynell

Viola Meynell (* October 15, 1885 in London, † October 27, 1956 in Greatham, Sussex ) was an English writer who was best known for her novels and short stories. She was the daughter of the poet Alice Meynell.

Life and work

Meynell grew up as one of seven children in a family that was close to both literary circles as well as the Roman Catholic Church. Her first novel, the romance novel Martha Wine, appeared in 1910. Subsequently Meynell lived alternately in London and on the estate of her father in Sussex. 1915 DH Lawrence spent some time on the good and portrayed the family Meynell in its history England, My England; as these, however, did not see themselves represented advantageous, they eventually ended the friendship.

Meynells novels are influenced by George Eliot and Thomas Hardy, and their Catholic imprinting plays an important role. The greatest success they had with Modern Lovers ( 1914) and Second Marriage ( 1918). Her short stories, which she first published in 1918 in journals and with whom it reached a wider audience, saw in the tradition of Anton Chekhov. The short stories are often created ironic compared to the novels and are less likely to theological questions. Meynell also be operated Later in her career as a literary journalist and editor. On the literary modernism they had little interest in her life.

Meynell broke off two engagements before 1922 a neighbor of her father married, with whom she had a son. However, the marriage did not make any good progress, so that the couple lived eventually permanently separated. In the last ten years of her life Meynell suffered from depression and a mental illness, which led to her death in 1956. Shortly before, she had been working on a short story collection, which was published posthumously.
