Viper Island

Viper Island.jpg

Viper Iceland is a small island in the Flat Bay of Port Blair. The belonging to the Andaman island of about 0.5 km ² formerly served as a prison for particularly recalcitrant prisoners or freedom fighters from the Empire of India. Among other things, here was the murderer of Richard Bourke, the sixth Earl of Mayo, hanged. Today you can still see the ruins of the prison and a gallows hill.

The island's name comes from the British ship Viper, which was stranded mid-18th century off the coast.
