Virovitica

Virovitica [ ʋirɔʋititsa ] ( German Wirowititz, Hungarian Verőce, Italian Varaviza ) is a city in Croatia. It is located near the Hungarian border near the river Drava at the northern slopes of Bilogora Mountains. Virovitica is counted to the historic region of Slavonia has always been, the nearby town of Koprivnica, however, belongs to Drauregion Podravina. History

Virovitica has been inhabited since ancient times.

In 1234 King Bela IV bestowed the Virovitica the privilege of a free royal town. 1242 gave the same king and the City of Zagreb same privileges in a document known as the " Golden Bull ". History of the Museum

The municipal museum in Virovitica was founded in September 1953 as a museum of local history of the city and the county Virovitica. In the attic Pejačević one and at times two Museologists begin with the establishment of this institution. With the help of many inhabitants of Virovitca by gifts, purchase and collect the material for the archaeological, ethnographic, cultural, historical and art collection was purchased and also the library, the archive and the photo library were founded.

The collected material was already Museum in May 1954 as " I. Museum Exhibition " on display. At this time, the exhibitions have been held in different rooms in the city due to lack of space.

The first permanent museum exhibition "The Story of Virovitica " was opened in 1968 in the great hall on the first floor of the castle, where numerous exhibitions still organized today. Since then, the whole castle was gradually established. As part of the 750th anniversary of the city Virovitica and the Scientific Congress on October 2, 1984, the permanent archaeological, cultural and historical, ethnographic and art collection of Branislav Glumac was opened.

The material and the permanent exhibition were resettled because of the threat of war in 1991 and were returned in the summer of 1992, and since then, visitors can visit the permanent exhibition.

Today the museum has about 5,000 items, of which 800 are on permanent display. They describe the life of around Virovitica from the Neolithic period to the early decades of the 20th century.

Castle Location

In the park in the city center, on the site of the medieval fortress is the castle of the family Pejačević that of 1800 - was built in 1804 according to the drawings of the Viennese architect Roth. The castle is a monument of Category I and a representative story building with stylistic features of the late baroque and classicism.
