Viscount Bridport

Viscount Bridport, of Cricket St Thomas in the County of Somerset, is a hereditary British title of nobility, which was presented twice and is supported by a branch of the famous seafaring family Hood.

Ceremonies

The title was first created on June 16, 1800 in the Peerage of Great Britain for Admiral Alexander Hood, the younger brother of the also British admiral Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood. He had participated in several successful battles of the First Coalition War. When he died in 1814 without a male descendant, the title became extinct.

The second ceremony took place on 6 July 1868 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to a great-grandson of the brother of the first Viscount Alexander Nelson Hood. This was a general in the British Army and a senior official at the court of Queen Victoria.

Subordinate title

The first Viscount since 1794, has already received the title Baron Bridport, which belongs to the Peerage of Ireland. This was awarded with a special mention that he could be inherited in the absence of male descendants also to the great-nephew Samuel Hood and his male descendants and in the alternative on the male descendants of the uncle Alexander Hood. This was then also at the death of the first Viscount. This title will now run as the subordinate title of Viscountswürde.

More titles

The first Viscount was awarded in 1796 the title of Baron Bridport, of Cricket St Thomas in the County of Somerset. This dignity, which belonged to the Peerage of Great Britain and was different than the Irish title connected to an automatic seat in the House of Lords, went out in 1814 with his death.

The second Baron Bridport married Lady Charlotte Nelson, 3rd Duchess of Bronte, which the Sicilian Duchy of Bronte Lord Nelson came to the Hood family by her famous uncle and naval hero Admiral. Their only surviving son was then raised to 1868 Viscount Bridport.
