Visistacaritra

Viśistacāritra (Japanese上行, Jōgyō, dt Excellent practicing ) is a bodhisattva. He is mentioned in the 15th chapter of the Lotus Sutra with the name Welling (of multitudes of Bodhisattvas ) from the earth, along with the Bodhisattvas Anantacāritra ( Unlimited practicing ), Viśuddhacāritra ( Pure practicing ) and Supratisthitacaritra ( practicing peaceful state ).

Viśistacāritra is considered the leader of these four bodhisattvas, who are also called the " four great Bodhisattvas originally transformed ." The properties of the Bodhisattva Viśistacāritra been described by scholars as T'ien -t'ai with that already described in Brahmanism virtue of selfless self.

For some schools of Nichiren Buddhism Nichiren regarded as the embodiment of Jōgyō ( Viśistacāritra ) and thus has taken on a special position.
