Vitalis of Milan

Vitalis, also known as Vitalis of Milan († 60 in Ravenna? ) Was an early Christian martyr and saint.

Vita

About his life, there are few reliable data. He is said to have been baptized by Gaius from Milan with his family, and the doctor have awarded Ursicinus of Ravenna before his martyrdom during the Neronian persecution of Christians solace and have buried the remains. As punishment he was then tortured in the judge's instructions Paulinus on the rack and buried alive in a pit or burned. His wife Valeria had suffered about the same time in Milan martyrdom.

There are some details that are not compatible with the death of the saints in the first century, such as the dating of his martyrdom in the time of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, or the paternity of Gervase and Protasius ( who lived until the 3rd century). Presumably, this is confusion with the same people.

Worship, iconography and Patrozinien

Vitalis is, in particular, the patron saint of the city of Ravenna. Of importance is the Holy primarily due to the eponymous Basilica of San Vitale, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was built in 547 on the site of his martyrdom.
