Viton

Viton is the trade name of DuPont Performance Elastomers for their fluoroelastomers. Viton is the relatively expensive in the art as sealing materials with high thermal and chemical resistance, for example as an O- ring seal for detachable flange connections in vacuum equipment. Due to the good solubility of Viton in esters and acetone, it continues to be used as a binder in the explosive processing and in pyrotechnics such as MTV (magnesium / Teflon / Viton). Depending on the chain length and the ratio of monomer units to each other is also available as Viton highly viscous paste, which softens at about 100 ° C and then can be processed by extrusion.

In contrast to other elastomers it keeps hydrocarbons such as oils and fuels stood at higher temperatures without swell or dissolve. Viton is made of fluorine and rubber.

FKM is the international abbreviation according to the DIN ISO standard (formerly FPM ) and the American Standard ASTM.

Viton is a trademark of DuPont Performance Elastomers.

Applications

  • Gaskets: The sealing rings of the space shuttle solid boosters consist of the heat-resistant Viton. The crash of the Challenger space shuttle played the material behavior at low temperatures an important role.
  • Shrink tubing
  • Protective gloves
