Vittorio De Sica

Vittorio De Sica (* July 7, 1901 in Sora, Italy, † November 13, 1974 in Neuilly -sur -Seine, near Paris, France ) was an Italian actor and film director of neo-realism.

Life

He grew up in Naples. After wishes of his father - a bank officer - completed training as an accountant, he debuted in 1918 with 16 years as an actor in the film. In 1924 he joined the theater group by Tatiana Pavlova. In the early 1930s he founded with his first wife Giuditta Rissone own theater company and worked there the image with which he would become famous later: that of the young woman favorite. With his role in Mario Camerinis film Gli uomini, che mascalzoni! (1932 ) began his popularity. He was in the 1930s in Italy one of the most celebrated actors.

In 1940 he led in Rose scarlatte first time director ( alongside Giuseppe Amato ). From 1943 on he worked with screenwriter Cesare Zavattini, who also wrote his masterpieces of Italian neorealism, shoeshine (1946) and The Bicycle Thief (1948 ). The latter film was awarded an Oscar. The following short films Miracle in Milan (1951) and Umberto D. (1952 ), he manifested his reputation as a major director and frequently worked with Arthur Cohn, who describes him as his "teacher." His reputation spread to Hollywood, where he participated in the war drama In another country by Charles Vidor 1957. For his performance in the film adaptation of the novel by Ernest Hemingway in 1958 he received an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor.

In the 1960s he turned commercially successful films, including the jobs created in collaboration with Federico Fellini Boccaccio '70 (1962) and also the oscar winning film Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963 ) with Sophia Loren in the lead role. For his 1970 film The Garden of the Finzi Contini he again received an Oscar as well as at the Berlinale in 1971 the Golden Bear.

Vittorio de Sica was cast in about 160 films and 125 theatrical productions and resulted in more than 35 films directed.

By Spanish actress María Mercader he was married to his second wife, the two had two sons, Manuel and Christian De Sica.
