Vladimir Atlantov

Vladimir Andreyevich Atlantow (Russian: Владимир Андреевич Атлантов; born February 19, 1939 in Leningrad ) is a Russian opera singer (tenor ).

Life

Already Atlantows parents were opera singers who had introduced him from an early age in classical singing. While still a student of Rimsky -Korsakov Conservatory in Leningrad, he was awarded the 1962 first contract at the Kirov Opera. Already in the following year he sang the first solo part.

Twice he was sent to singer classes at La Scala in Milan. In 1966 he won the Tchaikovsky Competition.

Since 1967 he was a soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he sang first primarily spinto roles, both from the Russian repertoire ( Hermann in "Pique Dame ," Vladimir in " Prince Igor ", Dmitri in " Boris Godunov ", Don Juan in " The Stone Guest " ), so also in French ( Don José in "Carmen" ) and Italian operas ( Manrico in " Il Trovatore ", Riccardo in " Masked Ball ", Radames in "Aida", Canio in " Pagliacci ", Turiddu in " Cavalleria rusticana ", Cavaradossi in " Tosca ").

His voice was darker in the course of his career and took a heroic coloring. He was also able to sing the role of Othello by Giuseppe Verdi. In this role, he celebrated with his wife Tamara Milaschkina as Desdemona triumphs at the Bolshoi Theatre.

Since 1987, he sang mainly at the western theaters after the Soviet authorities had given him permission to do so. In the same year he was awarded the Austrian honorary title "Chamber Singers ". He and his wife settled permanently in Vienna.

Records and opera films

For the Soviet monopoly company Melodiya, he worked on numerous Geasamtaufnahmen the Russian repertoire in the sixties and seventies. No other Russian tenor there are so many complete recordings.

Atlantow singing and playing in several Soviet opera films, including Roles in Bizet's "Carmen", Verdi's " Othello " and Dargomyschskis " Steinernem guest".

Western record companies were able to take him under contract until after his voice had already peaked.
