Vladimir Shalaev

Vladimir M. Shalaev (Russian: Владимир Михайлович Шалаев, Vladimir Mikhailovich Schalajew; born February 18, 1957) is a Russian- American physicist who deals with nanophotonics, metamaterials and plasmonics.

Shalaev graduated in 1979 he graduated from the University of Krasnoyarsk and received his PhD in 1983. Afterwards, he worked as a research assistant professor at the State University of Krasnoyarsk. 1990/91 he was at the University of Heidelberg and from 1991 to 1993 at the University of Toronto. He became Associate Professor in 1997 and Professor at New Mexico State University in 1993. He became a professor at Purdue University in 2001. Since 2004, he is Robert and Anne Burnett Professor there of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and since 2005 also professor of biomedical engineering.

In 2007 he presented the first metamaterial ( optical material with a negative refractive index ) in the near infrared spectral range.

In 2010 he was awarded the Willis E. Lamb Award and the Max Born Award. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America.
