Vladimír Šverák

Vladimír SVERAK (* 1959) is a Czech mathematician.

Life

SVERAK doctorate in 1986 at the Charles University in Prague in Jindrich Necas on the problems of the calculus of variations in non-linear elasticity theory. After that, he was a professor at Charles University and among other things, in 1992 at the Heriot -Watt University. He's since the 1990s, a professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

SVERAK deals with the calculus of variations and partial differential equations, and in recent times especially with the Navier -Stokes equation and Regularitätsfragen their solutions. In the 1980s he achieved important results in the calculus of variations, where he sparked among other things, open since 1950 issue of Charles Morrey ( whether rank -1 - convexity pulls quasiconvexity by itself - Sverak gave a counterexample ) and other important results for the characterization of posted by Morrey quasiconvexity introduced. In 1992 he was awarded the EMS price.

In 1994 he had Invited Speaker on the ICM in Zurich ( Lower semicontinuity of variational integrals and compensated compactness ) and in Berlin in 1998 ( Unexpected solutions of first and second order partial differential equations with Stefan Müller). In 1993 he received the Max Planck Research Award with Stefan Müller.
