With the dumb title hero ( Ivan Tschonkin, pretender to the throne ) was in yet another novel, the main character, Voinovich created a figure who - like Jaroslav Hašek's Soldier Schweik - the conditions under the dictatorship of Stalin by ad absurdum, that he had himself conditions strictly submits and followed all instructions without protest.

The first Tschonkin novel Voinovich made known in the West. After the reunification in Russia in 1990 he was officially rehabilitated and won several awards, most recently the Russian State Prize for the novel Aglaya Rewkinas last love. Today, Vladimir Voinovich lives temporarily again in Moscow. His works have been translated into more than 30 languages.
