Vladislav Ardzinba

Vladislav Ardzinba ( Abkhaz Владислав Григори - иҧа Арӡынба / Vladislav Grigori - ipa Ardsynba; Russian Владислав Григорьевич Ардзинба; born May 14, 1945 in Eschera near Sukhumi, † March 4, 2010 in Moscow, Russia ) was an Abkhaz politician. He was a historian and from November 1994 to February 12, 2005 President of the partially recognized Republic of Abkhazia.

Life

In 1966 he completed his studies at the State Pedagogical Institute Sukhumi ( Abkhazian State University today ). He then studied at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow, received his doctorate in history. 1969-1987 member of the Institute of History, Culture and Religions of the ancient peoples of the Near East. 1987 returned back to Ardzinba Sukhum, he became director of Abkhaz Institute of Language, Literature and History.

1988 Ardzinba was elected a member of the Upper Tens Soviets of Abkhazia. He became a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union in 1989, was elected there to the board member and chairman of the subcommittee on the status of autonomous units. In 1990 he became chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Abkhazia, 1992 Chairman of the Abkhazian Parliament. 1994 elected him the Abkhaz parliament as the first President of the Republic. On 3 October 1999 he was confirmed unopposed with 99 % of the vote in his office.

Ardzinba looked Abkhazia as an independent nation that is independent of Georgia. Although he met in 1997 with the Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze in Tbilisi to cooperation talks, at the same time, he has repeatedly made ​​proposals to Russia to take Abkhazia as an associate member of the Russian Federation. In critical political situations Ardzinba regularly flew to Russia to obtain the Russian president backing for his policies.

Ardzinba was married to Svetlana Dschergenia and had a daughter. His family is closely intertwined with the state's wood factory AbchasLes. It is one of the largest in Abkhazia and trades with Turkey.

Since 2002, Ardzinba had not performed in public. He suffered from a chronic illness and was treated regularly in Russia. The business of government adopted in substance the then Prime Minister Raul Khadzhimba who became his successor in 2004. On 12 February 2005, he was replaced by Sergei Bagapsh.

When Ardsinbas health deteriorated sharply beginning of March 2010, he was flown to a special machine from Sukhumi to Moscow, where he died on 4 March 2010 at the Central Hospital.
