Vlieland

Which belongs to the Netherlands Vlieland is one of the five inhabited West Frisian Islands. West of Vlieland is the island of Texel and east of the island of Terschelling, all located in the Wadden Sea to the North Sea. A ferry link to the mainland exists between Harlingen and Vlieland. There is also a ferry service in the summer of Texel to Vlieland. The ferry leaves at the sandbar " Vliehors " to specify the west adjoins Vlieland, where passengers will be picked up with a fording -terrain vehicle and brought to the island over the sandbar.

Vlieland had on 1 January 2013 a population of 1110. The beach length is about 20 km and the cycle network has a total length of 26 kilometers. The highest point marks the Vuurboetsduin.

On the island there is a village Oost -Vlieland. There is also the oldest house on the island, Tromp 's Huys, a former admiral office for monitoring of merchant shipping, now a museum. Next to the church stands on the Kerkplein to 1950 used as the poor, widows and orphans home Armhuis from the year in 1662. Lighthouse, as well as the lighthouse on Texel, in the season open to visitors. The further west, now defunct village of West -Vlieland 1736 abandoned after it had beaten them in the years several times to flooding.

To the west lies Het Posthuys ("the post-house "). Het Posthuys is the old station for changing horses of the post rider on the route to Amsterdam. Post of the sailors on the coast before Vlieland was brought in earlier centuries on Vlieland, Texel and Noord-Holland to Amsterdam. Today, the Het Posthuys is a popular tourist restaurant.

In the southeast, near the ferry terminal, there is a 2007 newly -made harbor for sailing and motor boats.

The island is considered autoluw, that is, only residents can apply for a license to operate a motor vehicle. To the west of the island in a nature reserve Vliehors is the largest training area of the Royal Air Force of the Netherlands. During the week, it may happen that the dropping of bombs (also sharp ) is practiced. The area is then marked with red flags. Only on the weekends is not practiced.
