Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor

A volatile corrosion inhibitor ( VCI) (volatile corrosion inhibitor ) is a substance which protects metallic materials against corrosion from the vapor phase out.

VCI materials exert their effect on the metal surface to which they are adsorbed and form a protective layer against the effects of oxygen and / or water. They are characterized by a high vapor pressure at relatively low temperatures. It is, for example, salts (amines, nitrides ) which are introduced into the paper or support film from which they gradually outgas. If the protected workpiece enclosed by this package, a saturated with the inhibitor atmosphere is established. After unpacking the workpiece, the inhibitor evaporates without leaving any residue. Therein lies the main advantage over protective layers of oils or waxes that must be laboriously removed.
