In the wider area there since Roman times and the Kingdom of Noricum numerous mining sites, but whose meaning is largely dwindled since about 1960.

A fund of 237 Noric silver coins ( tetradrachms ) was made in the area of the village Haimburg in 1972. It probably involves an assumption by the Austrian numismatist Robert Göbl a treasure hiding in the wake of the Noric - tauris Kishen disputes or the siege of Noreia by the Boii. Göbl dated the Fund for the time around 60 BC, which is provided by recent research, however, in question.

Since the settlement of the area by the Carantanians - Slavs in the 6th century. and the establishment of Carantanian statehood in the 7th century. the area around international market is closely connected with the Slovenian cultural history. The language spoken in the area Slovene historical dialect is attributed to the Jauntaler dialect ( Slow podjunščina ).

In 1090 commissioned Count Engelbert of Spanheim probably a merchant Volko from the Rhine Franks with the establishment of a market settlement. At that venue, which was located at the junction of several old roads in the area of today's suburban St. Ruprecht, the archbishopric of Salzburg Rupert founded a church. In the vicinity of this small market town of Carinthian Duke Bernhard of Spanheim left in 1217 to build a bridge over the Drava and 1231 to create a strategically located settlement gained city rights in the 13th century and mainly benefited from trade with iron. The first market can be occupied for the year 1309.

Today, peoples market is the economic, school and shopping center of the Jauntales, while the surrounding area is still heavily agricultural, but also increasingly touristy coined.

The organized cultural life of Slovenes ranges starting in 1893 with the founding of the association in Ciril Metodova podruznica za Velikovec [ Zweigverein of Cyril and Methodius Association of International Market] back. The most important institution of this period was founded on October 25, 1896 first Slovenian Catholic private school under the name Narodna šola ( School of the people) in Sankt Ruprecht / Šentrupert. It was founded by Cyril and Methodius Club Druzhba sv. Cirila in Matoda. On 21 October 1906, the Slovenian Cultural Association Lipa ( Linde ) was established, which can look back now at over a century of tradition. From May 1919 to October 1920 and a Slovenian school was set up in international market, however, was not continued in spite of the obligations under the Treaty of Saint Germain after the plebiscite in Carinthia 1920.

In the wake of the Balkan campaign of the German Wehrmacht in 1941 were already 60,000 Slovenes were deported from the occupied Slovenian / Yugoslavian Lower Styria, in April 1942 as planned Slovenes were from Carinthia, inter alia, deported from the Völkermarkter space, which subsequently led to organized armed resistance, which contributed to the military liberation of the Nazi reign of terror as well as a significant contribution to the rebirth of Austria.

A center of this armed resistance ( partisanship ) was also the Saualpe north of peoples market. "In memory of the fallen on the Saualpe partisans - relatives of eight nationalities - have the Carinthian Partisans a monument unveiled in 1947 in the presence of representatives of the Allies in St. Ruprecht in international market The monument is a symbol of the Carinthian and international fight against. fascism. unknown perpetrators have blown it in the night of 10 to 11 September 1953. Austrian authorities have not restored the monument in its original form, so it has the Association of Carinthian partisans restored in 1983 and before Peršmanhof - Museum built in Leppen ( market town of bath iron Kappel ).

On September 18, 1979, the Town Hall of peoples market, in which there was an exhibition about the Carinthian defensive struggle, target of a terrorist attack of the Yugoslav UDBA, in which the two Slovenian agents themselves and a museum employee seriously injured. The agent Luka Vidmar lost a leg. In the facade of City Hall, a hole was torn. The two UDBA agents were sentenced in 1980 to four years in prison but was replaced for half a year later against two agents of the Austrian defense ministry. The stop of international market was the latest in a series that began in 1972.

With the creation of local churches in 1850, also international market was set up as such. In 1973 the municipalities of Saint Peter were united on Wallersberg, Waisenberg, Tainach and Haimburg with the city in a large village whose population doubled by now nearly 80 villages around.

The Drau Valley Railway (formerly Fortezza / Fortezza (South Tyrol ) - Lienz - Spittal - Villach - Klagenfurt - Lead Castle - Maribor / Marburg) in contrast runs five kilometers south of the international market in the town of boars village. The train station is indeed international market Kühndorf, but can not be regarded as a direct railway connection of these.
